In a previous blog post, I considered North Wales, the region with the highest rate of students who leave Wales for study.
Next up, the region with the second highest rate - Mid Wales!
45.5% of students from Mid Wales left Wales for study according to HESA (2021/22), which is about 20% more than the national average.
There are only two Local Authorities at play here - Powys and Ceredigion. As you might expect, Powys has a high rate of 'leavers' (52.9%), which is unsurprising given that about half of the Welsh/English border is formed by Powys. There are also other factors, such as a weaker local draw (i.e. no 'local uni' nor major cities), but the long, fluid border is certainly a big factor. Broadly speaking, the closer you are to England, the more likely you are to leave Wales for study.
Ceredigion on the other hand has a lower rate of students that leave Wales (31.8%), below the national average. Again, this is not surprising considering it lies towards the west of Wales, and has a strong local draw in the form of Aberystwyth University (Aberystwyth itself is also the largest town in Mid Wales), as well as the University of Wales Trinity Saint David's Lampeter Campus. As we've discussed in previous posts, local draws like this reduce the number of students who leave Wales for study. Aberystwyth University is by far the most popular choice for students in the Local Authority, then it's The Open University, and then in joint third place is Trinity Saint Davids and Swansea University
Two very different Local Authorities and rates, but together they balance each other out.

Mewn blogbost blaenorol, fe wnes i ystyried Gogledd Cymru, y rhanbarth sydd â’r gyfradd uchaf o fyfyrwyr sy’n gadael Cymru i astudio.
Nesaf i fyny, y rhanbarth gyda'r gyfradd ail uchaf - Canolbarth Cymru!
Gadawodd 45.5% o fyfyrwyr o Ganolbarth Cymru y wlad i astudio yn ôl HESA (2021/22), sydd tua 20% yn fwy na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol.
Dim ond dau Awdurdod Lleol sydd i ystyried yma - Powys a Cheredigion. Fel y gallech ddisgwyl, mae gan Bowys gyfradd uchel o 'ymadawyr' (52.9%), ac nid yw'n syndod o ystyried bod tua hanner ffin Cymru/Lloegr yn cael ei ffurfio gan Bowys. Mae yna ffactorau eraill hefyd, megis tyniad lleol gwannach (h.y. dim ‘prifysgol leol’ na dinasoedd mawr), ond mae’r ffin hir, hylifol yn sicr yn ffactor mawr. Yn fras, po agosaf yr ydych at Loegr, y mwyaf tebygol y byddwch o adael Cymru i astudio.
Ar y llaw arall, mae gan Geredigion gyfradd is o fyfyrwyr sy'n gadael Cymru (31.8%), sy'n is na'r cyfartaledd cenedlaethol. Eto, nid yw hyn yn syndod o ystyried ei bod yng Ngorllewin Cymru, ac mae ganddi atyniad lleol cryf ar ffurf Prifysgol Aberystwyth (Aberystwyth ei hun yw tref fwyaf Canolbarth Cymru hefyd), yn ogystal â Champws Llambed Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant. Fel rydym wedi trafod mewn mannau eraill, mae atyniadau lleol fel hyn yn lleihau nifer y myfyrwyr sy'n gadael Cymru i astudio. Prifysgol Aberystwyth yw’r dewis mwyaf poblogaidd o bell ffordd i fyfyrwyr yr Awdurdod Lleol, yna Y Brifysgol Agored, ac yna yn gydradd drydydd mae’r Drindod Dewi Sant a Phrifysgol Abertawe.
Dau Awdurdod Lleol a chyfraddau gwahanol iawn, ond gyda’i gilydd maent yn cydbwyso ei gilydd.
