4 Simple Tips for Writing a Graduate Job Advert

Jack Taylor, Employer & Partnerships Manager

With the graduate job market getting more competitive, what can employers do to stand out from the crowd and create an appealing graduate job ad that is at the top of the pecking order?

Here are a few simple tips to consider when writing a graduate job advert:

Keep it simple

A simple job title with the word ‘graduate’ in it is a good start. This is the first thing that a candidate sees and should be no longer than 2-3 words – anything longer can be confusing and overwhelming and can put graduates off from clicking on your advert. Also avoid using technical words and jargon in the body of the advert that a graduate wouldn’t understand.

Sell your learning & development

Make sure you sell your learning & development (L&D) ‘offer’ as this is a key factor for graduates when applying for roles. Larger employers offering graduate schemes, should specify the structured training programme and support that is on offer. Whilst smaller employers might struggle to offer something as structured, they can still offer benefits for graduates such as one-on-one mentorship with directors/founders within the company, as well as ‘hands-on’ learning.

Target the graduates you want

Adverts tend to perform better when they are targeted towards a specific audience. There are two things to consider here: one is keywords, and the other is attractiveness. Your advert should include keywords that you think your target candidate is using in the search bar e.g. “Marketing Graduate”. Then also consider what would be attractive for said Marketing Graduate? Perhaps you could sell your ‘creativity’ as a company or the creative nature of the role!

Criteria – less is more

Keep the ‘essential list’ to a minimum. Specify what degree/graduates that you want with no more than a few more bullet points of some skills and experience that you are looking for. Your advert should inspire them to apply, not scare them off. And never be that person who copies and pastes the 10-year-old job description with the long specification list!

Gyda'r farchnad swyddi i raddedigion yn dod yn fwy cystadleuol, beth all cyflogwyr ei wneud i sefyll allan o'r dorf a chreu hysbyseb swydd sy'n apelgar i raddedigion ac sy'n curo'r gystadleuaeth?

Dyma rai awgrymiadau syml i'w hystyried wrth ysgrifennu hysbyseb swydd i raddedigion:

Cadwch ef yn syml

Mae teitl swydd syml gyda'r gair 'graddedig' ynddo yn ddechrau da. Dyma'r peth cyntaf y mae ymgeisydd yn ei weld ac ni ddylai fod yn fwy na 2-3 gair - gall unrhyw beth hirach fod yn ddryslyd ac yn llethol a gall atal graddedigion rhag clicio ar eich hysbyseb. Hefyd, ceisiwch osgoi defnyddio jargon a geiriau technegol yng nghorff yr hysbyseb na fyddai graddedig yn ei deall.

Gwerthwch eich dysgu a'ch datblygiad

Gwnewch yn siŵr eich bod yn gwerthu'ch 'cynnig' dysgu a datblygu (D&D) gan fod hyn yn ffactor allweddol i raddedigion wrth wneud cais am rolau. Dylai cyflogwyr mwy o faint sy'n cynnig cynlluniau i raddedigion, nodi'r rhaglen hyfforddi strwythuredig a'r cymorth sydd ar gael. Er y gallai cyflogwyr llai o faint ei chael hi'n anodd cynnig rhywbeth mor strwythuredig, gallant barhau i gynnig buddion i raddedigion fel mentoriaeth un i un gyda chyfarwyddwyr/sylfaenwyr yn y cwmni, yn ogystal â dysgu 'ymarferol'.

Targedwch y graddedigion rydych chi eu heisiau

Mae hysbysebion yn tueddu i berfformio'n well pan fyddant wedi'u targedu at gynulleidfa benodol. Mae dau beth i'w hystyried yma: un yw geiriau allweddol, a'r llall yw atyniad. Dylai eich hysbyseb gynnwys geiriau allweddol rydych chi'n credu bod eich ymgeisydd targed yn eu defnyddio yn y bar chwilio e.e. "Graddedig Marchnata". Yna hefyd ystyriwch beth fyddai'n ddeniadol i Raddedigion Marchnata? Efallai y gallech werthu eich 'creadigrwydd' fel cwmni neu natur greadigol y rôl!

Meini prawf – osgowch gorfanylu

Cadwch y 'rhestr hanfodol' cyn lleied â phosibl. Nodwch pa radd/graddedigion rydych chi eu heisiau gyda dim mwy nag ychydig o bwyntiau bwled o rai sgiliau a phrofiad rydych chi'n chwilio amdano. Dylai eich hysbyseb eu hysbrydoli i wneud cais, nid eu dychryn. A pheidiwch byth â bod y person hwnnw sy'n copïo a gludo'r disgrifiad swydd 10 oed gyda'r rhestr fanyleb hir!
